Elba Island

The villa we’re staying in was rented to other people last weekend, so we decided to take the opportunity to spend the weekend glamping on Elba Island, about 200km south-west of Siena.

After packing all of our belongings into the spare room I picked up the kids from school and then collected Mandi who had just returned from Austria. We had a (now-familiar) stunning drive down to the coast.

Although the instructions when I bought the ferry tickets said to arrive 90 minutes before departure, the guard at the dock said 30 was plenty. So we had a pizza snack and then proceeded to the dock.

Pretty soon our ferry arrived.

We followed instructions and drove aboard.

Once the car was securely stowed we followed the other passengers upstairs for an Aperol Spritz.

It was a beautiful evening on the Mediterranean.

In 45 minutes we were at the island.

It was about a 10-minute drive from the port to the resort. We arrived just as it was getting dark, grabbed some food and drinks from the bar and headed to bed.

The next morning I tried to sneak out early for a coffee but got sprung by Audrey who insisted on coming along.

We had our coffee and pastry and headed out to explore the resort. We got back to the tent just as the others were waking up.

It was time to hit the pool.

The local inhabitants were waking up too.

After a day enjoying the pool and the waterslides we headed to the beach bar to watch the sunset. It didn’t disappoint.

I next morning my coffee buddy and I headed out early again.

Then we all got in the car to explore the island’s beaches. The scenery was like something out of a Bond Film.

The beaches were stunning.

After a day at the beach we headed back to the resort and after waiting for an hour while we found the Dutch family that had parked us in we went out for our first Thai food since leaving Sydney. It was surprisingly good.

The next day we packed up and had a great lunch on the dock while we waited for our return ferry.

This one was more like a cruise ship and even had a play area and video arcade.

We made it back home and unpacked everything and got everyone to bed early for the week ahead.
